Jorge and Aura

Jorge was very happy living in Chicago but he worried about his mother in Columbia who was getting older and did not have her children nearby to care for her. Despite some reluctance, Jorge was able to convince his mother, Aura, to move to Chicago.

Although several of Jorge’s siblings were also here, they all worked long hours and didn’t have a lot of time to spend with their mother during the day. Despite their good intentions, Jorge was beginning to wonder if he had made a mistake. His mom missed socializing with friends, the warm weather of Columbia and just keeping active.

In Chicago, she started spending most of her days watching television, she gained a lot of weight, and her health began to deteriorate. Then one night, Jorge had to rush his mom to the hospital where doctors were forced to perform open-heart surgery.

After that, Jorge enrolled his mom in Casa Central’s Adult Wellness Center, and to this day, swears that the program “saved his mother’s life and saved his family.” At the Center she made friends, could communicate in Spanish and recovered a piece of home, while remaining close to her kids and family.
